In memory of Karel Barták
We were saddened to learn of the death of our former colleague, Karel Barták, a long-time Brussels correspondent of the Czech News Agency (ČTK).
Karel worked for ČTK, spending eleven years in Brussels until 2006. Those who remember him from the Brussels press corps will remember a hardworking, ever-present journalist who stood out not only for his height, but also for his sharp mind, extensive knowledge and witty sense of humour.
After Brussels, Karel joined the European Commission, where he held various positions in DG Education and Culture from 2006 to 2018. After retiring in 2019, he continued to work as an independent observer and reporter.
He never really stayed away from Brussels. In recent years, we could still meet him around EU summits and major events, including during the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU.
Former Czech journalist, current Commission Spokesperson and friend of Karel, Eva Hrncirova said: “Karel will stay a legend. He combined exceptional knowledge of European affairs and great journalistic instinct with a wonderful sense of humour. Always ready to help, he also raised a new generation of journalists covering EU affairs, including me. I will always remember his comments about Europe and him as a brilliant person.”
We will remember Karel with great affection — as a sharp and witty colleague, a familiar face of the Brussels press corps, and a warm and engaging person.
