For investigative journalists covering the EU, unlocking official documents is one of reporting’s most vital—and daunting—challenges. On 8 September at 1.15 pm, API’s Alexander Fanta (Follow the Money) and Pascal Hansens (Investigate Europe) host a 90-minute workshop at the Residence Palace dedicated to mastering Freedom of Information (FOI) requests and EU access-to-documents laws.

Timed after the midday at 1pm to accommodate busy newsroom schedules, the interactive session breaks down filing procedures, statutory deadlines, common legal exemptions, and strategic workarounds under the EU framework. Alexander Fanta will also unveil his new guide to national FOI regulations across Europe, offering a practical roadmap for cross-border inquiries.

Pascal Hansens will also introduce API’s Transparency Group and the JET Initiative aimed at colleagues interested and/or facing difficulties with access to documents procedures.
Geared toward journalists new to EU affairs or transparency requests, the workshop will take place in the Maalbeek Room of the Residence Palace.

We very much look forward to welcoming you / Nous nous réjouissons de vous y retrouver.

Warm regards / Cordialement,
