The International Press Association (API-IPA) is concerned about the closing down of the Hungarian daily ‘Népszabadság’ last week

The voice of the Brussels press corps expresses its solidarity with the Hungarian colleagues who might lose their work.

As ‘Népszabadság’ has been one of the media independent of the Hungarian government, without this newspaper, the ruling Fidesz party will consolidate further its control over the Hungarian media. API-IPA deplores this new step towards amedia system that is incompatible with the principles of democracy and a pluralistic Hungarian society.

Brussels journalists expect the European Commission to investigate the circumstances that led to the end of one of the oldest and most respected papers in an EU-member state.
