This must sound like fake news to you, but it is the truth, simply the truth – and a fantastic truth. For the first time in its more or less glorious, but longstanding history API´s football team (FC API) managed to win the annual Subsicup tournament.
The decision came in a dramatic penalty shootout against the favorites and tournament serial winners Austrian Dream Team (ADT). Augustin Palokaj, well trained to stay calm in the wake of people on the podium in press rooms not answering his precise questions, now kept his nerves in front of the opposition´s goal keeper and laid the basis for a rather unexpected success.
FC API, a fine combination of journalistic and other skills, notably from FC Übersteiger, Gambia and Mali, needed a bit of time for the fine tuning. While we lost the first game against the Austrian team (0-4), Momo with a fine header secured a 1-0 win against FC Lithuania, before our center forward Mahmed nicely scored twice against Team Stuttgart.
In a close semifinal game FC API beat the tournament organizers Dynamo Subsi by 1-0, with our central defender – and sublime team mate – Alagie making the difference.
In the final we faced again the Austrian Dream Team in what eventually would end up with some sort of nightmare…. for them. While Kalifa managed to somehow find a gap and open the score, there was a late equalizer which meant that the penalty shootout would determine the winners. Our midfielder Buba, now also active as goalie, kept us in the race. Following Augustin´s stroke of genius it was up to Momo to convert the decisive penalty – the result of which you can be admired on the picture.
Special mentions to Andreas for his calm and firm stance in goal, Jerreh for his exemplary attitude on and next to the pitch, to Olivier who came back into the tournament in spite of an injury….to all the others: Stephen, Gordian, Nikolaj, Pedro, Thomas R, Thomas W….and not least our young supporters – aged between three and 16 (and even it bit more).
Well done to everyone and remember: This is not fake news!
